A Normal Form For Entity-Relationship Diagrams

چکیده

In this paw=, a normal form for entity-relationship diagrams and the objectives for such a normal form are presented. A normal form entity-relationship diagram may consist of composite attributes, multivalued attributes, and special types of relationship sets such as existence dependent, identifier dependent, ISA, UNION, INTERSECT, and DECOMPOSE relationships. A comprehensive algorithm is given to translate a normal form entity-relationship diagram to a set of relations. We show that all relations generated are either in third normal form or fifth normal form. General guidelines and detailed steps for converting an entity-relationship diagram to a normal form entity-relationship diagram are presented. These steps can also be used as guidelines for designing databases using entity-relationship approach.

A Theory for Entity-Relationship View Updates

The traditional problem of updating relational databases through views is an important practical problem that has attracted much interest. In this paper, we examine the problem of view update in EntityRelationship based database management systems [17] where the conceptual schema is represented by a normal form ER diagram [16] and views may be modelled by ER diagrams. We develop a theory within...

Issues and Guidelines in Modeling Decomposition of Minimum Participation in Entity-Relationship Diagrams

The entity-relationship model has long been employed for conceptual modeling of databases. Methodologies and heuristics have been developed, both for effective modeling and for translating entity-relationship models into relational models. One aspect of modeling that is often overlooked in design methodologies is the use of optional versus mandatory participation (i.e., minimum participation) o...

Alt-c 2007 Research Paper Learning and Automatically Assessing Graph-based Diagrams

To date there has been very little work on the machine understanding of imprecise diagrams – diagrams drawn by students in response to assessment questions. While there have successful attempts at assessing text (essays) automatically, little success with diagrams has been reported. In this paper, we explain an approach to the automatic interpretation of graph-based diagrams based on a 5-stage ...
